What is a Step-up SIP Calculator?

A regular SIP keeps the same monthly amount for years. Incomes rarely stay the same, though: most salaried investors get a raise every year. A step-up SIP raises the monthly instalment by a fixed percentage each year, so your investing grows with your income.

This calculator shows two things side by side:

  • With step-up: your SIP rises every year by the percentage you choose.
  • Without step-up: the same starting SIP, unchanged for the whole period.

The difference between the two is what the yearly increase adds.

How the Step-up SIP is Calculated

For each year y (starting at 0), the monthly SIP is:

SIPy = Starting SIP × (1 + step-up %)y

Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at a monthly rate r derived from the expected annual return (r = (1 + annual return)1/12 − 1). The “without step-up” figure uses the standard SIP formula, the same one as our SIP Calculator:

FV = P × [(1 + r)n − 1] ÷ r × (1 + r)

With a 0% step-up, both figures are identical.

Why a Small Yearly Increase Matters

Compounding works on time. An increase made in year 2 has 13 more years to grow in a 15-year plan, so the early increases add the most. With the default inputs above, a 10% yearly step-up roughly doubles the money invested and adds about ₹35 lakh to the projected value compared with a flat SIP.

Two practical points:

  • Link it to your increment. A step-up below your expected salary rise keeps the SIP affordable even in a year with a smaller raise.
  • Set it once. Many fund houses offer a step-up (top-up) option at SIP registration, so the increase happens automatically.

Step-up SIP vs Goal-Based SIP

If you already know the amount you need, use the Goal-Based SIP Calculator to find the monthly SIP for that target, then come back here to see how a yearly step-up changes the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) is a SIP whose monthly amount increases by a fixed percentage or amount every year. For example, ₹10,000 a month with a 10% step-up becomes ₹11,000 a month in the second year and ₹12,100 in the third. Many fund houses let you set this up when you register the SIP.

How does this step-up SIP calculator work?

It raises your monthly SIP by the step-up percentage at the start of every year, adds each instalment at the start of the month, and grows the balance at a monthly rate derived from the expected annual return. It then compares the result with a flat SIP of your starting amount over the same period, using the same method as our regular SIP calculator.

How much difference does a 10% step-up make?

With the calculator's default inputs (₹10,000 a month, 10% step-up, 15 years, 12% illustrative return), the step-up SIP is projected at about ₹82.7 lakh against about ₹47.6 lakh for a flat ₹10,000 SIP. You also invest more: about ₹38.1 lakh instead of ₹18 lakh. Change the inputs to see your own numbers.

What step-up percentage should I choose?

A common approach is to link the step-up to your expected salary increase, so the SIP stays a similar share of your income. If your increments are around 8–10% a year, a 5–10% step-up keeps the SIP affordable. The calculator shows what each choice adds; the right amount depends on your goals and cash flow.

Are the results from this calculator guaranteed?

No. The results are projections based on the return rate you enter. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed; actual returns can be higher or lower. Past performance is not indicative of future returns.
