What Does This Retirement Calculator Show?
It answers two questions: how much money you need on the day you retire, and how much to invest every month until then. It uses the same method as our guide How Much Money Do You Need to Retire?:
- Inflate today’s expenses. Monthly expenses at retirement = today’s expenses × (1 + inflation)years to retirement.
- Apply the multiple. Corpus needed = monthly expenses at retirement × 12 × the corpus multiple.
- Subtract what you already have. Existing savings are grown to your retirement age at the expected return.
- Solve for the SIP. The monthly SIP that builds the remaining amount, invested at the start of each month, uses the same formula as our Goal-Based SIP Calculator.
Choosing the Corpus Multiple
The multiple is the most important choice in this calculator. It stands in for how long the money must last and how it is invested after you retire.
| Multiple | When it may fit |
|---|---|
| 25X | The often-quoted “4% rule” from US data; thin for Indian inflation |
| 30X | A common starting point for retirement around 60 |
| 35X–40X | More cushion: early retirement, longer life expectancy, or lower post-retirement returns |
Retiring at 45 or 50 means the money must last 40 years or more, which is why Early Retirement (FIRE) in India suggests 30X to 35X rather than 25X.
Why Starting Early Changes the SIP So Much
Inflation raises the corpus you need, but time lowers the SIP that builds it. Try the presets above: the same lifestyle needs a much larger monthly SIP when there are 15 years to retirement instead of 30. If the SIP looks out of reach, the levers are the ones in the inputs: retire a little later, start with existing savings, or plan for lower expenses after retirement.
After You Retire
The corpus has to be turned into a monthly income. See Monthly Income After Retirement for how SWPs, SCSS and the bucket approach work, and the SWP Calculator to test how long a corpus lasts at a given withdrawal. The Retirement Planning hub covers EPF, PPF, NPS and healthcare costs after 60.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does this retirement calculator work?
It grows today's monthly expenses at the inflation rate until your retirement age, multiplies the yearly expenses at that point by the corpus multiple you choose (30X by default), and treats the result as the corpus needed. It then works out the monthly SIP that, together with any existing savings growing at the same expected return, would reach that corpus by your retirement age.
What is the 30X rule?
The 30X rule says the corpus you need at retirement is about 30 times your yearly expenses at that time. It is a common starting benchmark. Because inflation in India has been higher than in many developed markets, a range of 30X to 40X gives more cushion, and someone retiring early (for example at 45 or 50) may plan for 30X to 35X or more. How much do I need to retire at 60 if I spend ₹50,000 a month today?
With the calculator's default inputs (age 30, 6% inflation, 30X, 12% illustrative return before retirement), ₹50,000 a month today becomes about ₹2.87 lakh a month at 60, so the corpus needed is about ₹10.3 crore. Building that from zero would take a SIP of about ₹33,600 a month for 30 years. Change the inputs to see your own numbers.
Should I include EPF, PPF and NPS as existing savings?
Include the money you have set aside for retirement today, such as EPF, PPF, NPS and retirement-earmarked mutual funds. The calculator grows it at the same expected return as the SIP, which is a simplification: EPF and PPF earn administered rates, so treat the result as an estimate. Don't include money meant for other goals.
Are the results from this calculator guaranteed?
No. The results are projections based on the inflation, return and multiple you enter. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed, and actual inflation and expenses can differ. Review the numbers every few years.
