GIFT City Funds Explained: The IFSC Route for NRI Investors | Meta Investment
Draft — pending FME compliance sign-off. This page describes GIFT City / IFSC fund categories at a general level for educational purposes. It has not yet been approved for publication by a Fund Management Entity (FME) and must not be linked from navigation, the
/nri/hub, the/nri/us-canada/sub-hub, or the Route Finder tool until that approval is recorded. Seedocs/nri-corner-plan.md's Phase 1 tracker for the unblock checklist.
The Freshest Thing Here: AIF to PMS/SMA
Several IFSC investment strategies have shifted structure recently — from an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) wrapper to a Portfolio Management Service / Separately Managed Account (PMS/SMA) wrapper — and that shift has brought minimum ticket sizes down meaningfully:
- IFSC AIF (non-retail): minimum USD 150,000 per investor (USD 40,000 for employees/directors of the manager)
- IFSC PMS/SMA: minimum USD 75,000 — half the AIF threshold
A separately managed account inside the IFSC gives direct securities ownership, offshore (FEMA) treatment, and a lower entry point than the AIF route. That combination is worth knowing about before assuming GIFT City is only for very large tickets.
(These figures are researched drafts, not yet independently verified against the primary IFSCA Fund Management Regulations text — confirm current thresholds before acting.)
What GIFT City Is
GIFT City is India's International Financial Services Centre, regulated by the IFSCA (International Financial Services Centres Authority) rather than SEBI, and treated as offshore for FEMA purposes. Funds here are typically USD-denominated — no rupee conversion on the way in or out — and the tax framework for non-resident investors differs from a domestic mutual fund's.
AIF vs. PMS/SMA, Side by Side
| IFSC AIF (non-retail) | IFSC PMS/SMA | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum investment | USD 150,000 | USD 75,000 |
| Ownership | Pooled fund units | Direct securities, separately managed |
| Regulator | IFSCA | IFSCA |
| Currency | USD | USD |
What This Is Not
GIFT City is not a workaround for US or Canadian tax reporting obligations. If you're a US person, questions like PFIC treatment or Form 8621 reporting, and if you're a Canadian resident, questions like T1135 reporting, are matters for your own tax advisor to assess against your specific holdings — we name these considerations, we don't analyse or advise on them.
Access Reality
Meta Investment's role here is referral-only: we refer you to the relevant IFSCA-registered Fund Management Entity, which handles its own onboarding, KYC, and product-specific disclosures directly. Our ARN-129322 and APRN01448 registrations do not extend to IFSC-domiciled schemes.
